What’s a Pineapple got to do with it?
What's a pineapple got to do with being a Christian? Everything! It is time to discover your calling. Your gifts, talents, purpose and what it really means to be a Christian woman. It is time to be God's gal. A 522Gal that is.
Well girls, it all comes down to identity. We spend our entire lives trying to figure out who we are and who we want to be. We find our identity in our friends, our position, our careers and the roles we play in life. We strive to be a good friend, a great wife, a perfect mother and excellent at our jobs, hobbies and well, everything! We are always trying to figure it out. Who am I? And what am I good at?
As Christians we are adding another layer. Actually, we are adding a foundation! The layer that all other things are built on. We are striving to be like Jesus. But we are girls, so we are working to find the identity that matches our unique needs. And right there in the bible, while we are looking to figure it all out, is an example of “the perfect woman.” No doubt you have heard of this incredible woman detailed in Proverbs. And this, my friends, is not the end of our stress, it is in fact the beginning.
Some women love Proverbs 31. It is a great chapter and highlights a great woman. While it is debated if this was one real woman or one ideal we should strive for or even the characteristics of many women, the details are clear and measuring up against this description is exhausting.
For starters, she stays up late and gets up early. Right there I have lost the measuring contest against this woman. (I am really not a morning person.) She makes a to do list for her servants. Well, I am short on servants, so no luck with that verse. She is a good business person and makes wise investments. I have failed at more than one business attempt, so here too lies a shortcoming for my column in the comparison chart. I do want my children to bless me and my husband to praise me. I try my best to do right by them. But my husband is not known at the city gates, so there’s that….
While this chapter gives us some amazing accomplishments to strive for, working to become this woman is not what God intended for all of us. There I said it. Now I know there will be some derogatory comments below for my blasphemous deduction of scripture. But the facts remain, God created us with unique gifts, talents, plans and purpose. So He couldn’t possibly have intended for us all to achieve the lifestyle of the woman described.
Don't read this wrong, there are great examples we should follow in Proverbs 31. She speaks with wisdom, she laughs without fear of the future, she helps the poor and takes care of her household… these are the qualities we can all have and should be working towards.
Yes, the P31 woman is amazing and if we are being honest - really honest girls, then we can admit that we do know women, or at least one woman in our lives, who can measure up with this incredible description. There are women who are doing it all. But I don’t believe it is the design for all of us. It exemplifies some great goals, but not the end game for every woman. So exhale! This is not who God called you to be.
God called you to be you! He created you with amazing gifts and talents. He placed you in a unique place and time with a reason and purpose. He chose you as His precious daughter and he wants you to be amazingly, wonderfully, you.
This is why I love the symbolism of the pineapple! I think it exemplifies what God called us all to be. (way better than the exhausting Proverbs 31 woman). Pineapples are sweet and enjoyable. Each one is unique and they always wear a crown! Don’t forget the pizzaz! (You know, when you bite into a pineapple and there is just a little kick to taste. It isn’t sour - it’s pizzaz-y.)
We are daughters of the Most High! We share in a crown of glory and God aches for us to act like it. To know who we are and our created value! Our unique talents and purpose. And of course, all fathers want their daughters to be sweet with a little pizzaz.
Going back to the crown thing…
Being a princess, a queen, a daughter of a king does not mean sitting around eating cupcakes and letting others do everything for her. A true daughter loves her people. She puts their needs above her own. She works to improve her Kingdom. She puts love in action. She wants peace but is ready to fight. She seeks out knowledge and wisdom to be able to do her best. She is clothed in strength and dignity. (You recognize that one right?) Wearing a crown is a real calling for each of us.
Pay attention… this is where it gets interesting!
While I have been super into this pineapple analogy for a while, God showed me something new the other day that got me even more excited about the analogy. And I would love to share it with you if I can. (And I can because this is my blog. lol)
Pineapples are all unique, no two are exactly alike. While that it is true that they are all different, they are easy to identify because they are also all similar. No one looks at a pineapple and wonders what it is. Even before it is ripe, while it is growing, you can tell - hey that is a pineapple. Because it looks like one.
You can identify them by their fruit, that is, by the way they act. Can you pick grapes from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles? A good tree produces good fruit, and a bad tree produces bad fruit. A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. So every tree that does not produce good fruit is chopped down and thrown into the fire. Yes, just as you can identify a tree by its fruit, so you can identify people by their actions. - Matthew 7:16- 20
In Matthew 7, Jesus tells us that we will know people by the fruit they produce. In my research, I found there are 4 types of pineapples and each type or species has many strains steaming from it. This means that there are several subtle differences. And while there are differences in texture, flavor and resilience these differences would likely be unnoticeable to your average grocery shopper. While every single one is unique, they are easy to identify because they are still overwhelmingly same fruit.
That was what God revealed to me. It is about the fruit that we bare, we should be easily identifiable as Christians because our fruit should be the same. Yes, there are many different “strands” of Christianity. (We call them denominations). There may be some differences. But our fruit should be the same. And God even illustrates this further in great detail…. We are filled with the Holy Spirit, so we should represent the fruits of the spirit.
Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness and Self-control.
So while some may compare themselves to the Proverbs 31 woman, I strive to be a Gal.
A 5:22 Gal that is.
So I hope you will join me in the journey to being a 522 gal. The journey to being like a pineapple. A sweet, enjoyable, unique, crown wearing, fruit bearing, spirit filled example of Christ, with a little pizzaz.
